지독히도 다사다난했던 2020년이 끝나고 석 달이 흘렀다.

음악이란 '매개체'이다. 음악이란 '공명'이다. 음악이란 연주자와 편집자, 감상자와 그 주변인들에게까지 영향을 준다. 음악이 곧 '아우라'를 발하는 것이다. 고독과 고립의 시대, 사람이 사람에게 닿을 수 없는 요즈음에 음악은 사람들에게 어떻게 와닿을 수 있을까. Music Industry 4.0에 우리가 실험한 몇 가지 곡을 담았다. 재즈, 익스페리멘탈, 앰비언트, 메탈... 얼굴 모를 당신의 취향도 몰라서, 이것저것 꾹꾹 눌러담았다. 그리고, 바다에 편지를 던지듯 당신에게로 던져본다. 병을 열고 그 안에 든 편지를 펼치시라.

리허설은 예비역이다. 대한민국에서 예비역이라 함은 재미나 즐거움보다는 의무이기 때문에 체력과 시간을 할애하는 일에 가깝다. 그러나 음악에서 예비역이란 말은 사뭇 다르게 다가온다.  그것은 달아오르고, 신나는 시간의 시작이고, 관객도 청중도 없지만 우리끼리 부담없이 연주하는 것이다. 진짜 무대에서라면 팀을 작살냈을 실수도 리허설 중에는 웃을 수 있듯이. 아, 그래도 너무 장난스럽게 한 건 아니니 안심하시라. 오히려 진심을 담았으니. 다만 그 진심을 즐거움에 다 가져다 써버려서, 듣고 있으면 당신도 절로 뭔가 시작해보고 싶어질지도 모른다는 건 알아두시라.

2. Head full of dreams about Grammy Awards winning

영화제에 칸이 있다면 음반에는 그래미가 있다. 그러니까, 영화 사업은 칭기즈 칸처럼 정복적이고 음반 사업은 문법처럼 체계적이란 소리다. 이런 어줍잖은 헛소리를 지껄이는 까닭은 우리가 음악을 사랑하는 주제에 앨범을 만들어버려서다. 우리 머릿속은 꿈으로 가득한데, 그래미 상을 받고 잠들면 그래미 상을 꿈꾸던 시절의 꿈을 꿀 수 있을까. 꿈은 현실에 가까워질수록 초점이 흐려진다. 우리의 꿈이 가장 선명할 때에, 너무나 대책없이 선명해서 건드리는 음악 모두에 묻어나가는 때에 이 음악을 만들었다.

부모님이 건물주나 대주주가 아니라면, 음악을 하는 일은 어머니 아버지의 걱정을 크게 사는 일이다.  그분들의 걱정을 걷어내리고 우리가 하고 싶은 일을 계속하려면 '우리는 잘 할 수 있다' 라고 꾸준히 어필해야 한다. 그럼으로써 그분들은 안심하신다. 이걸 듣는 당신도, 여기 담긴 일종의 화이트노이즈와 함께 두려움이나 불안은 흘려보내고 열정과 평온을 얻어가시라.

모든 아들이 아버지가 되는 건 아니지만, 모든 아버지는 언젠가 아들이었다. 그리고 모든 아버지는 언젠가 떠난다. 떠남이란 남겨짐과 한 쌍이다. 아버지는 우리라는 짐을 지고 이곳까지 왔다가, 우리에게 자신의 짐을 남겨두고 떠나는 것이다. 남겨진 짐가방 속에서 열쇠 하나를 찾아내자. 그 열쇠로만 열 수 있는 방을 찾아 아버지의 책장에 쌓인 먼지를 털어내자. 그곳에서 CD 한 세트를 찾아, 자취를 감추지 못하게 꼭 끌어안고 있자. 결국 이 세상에서 CD 플레이어는 사라지고 말겠지만 그곳에 담긴 음악, 선율, 목소리는 사라지지 않는다.

다분히 불필요한 설명이지 않나. 우리에게 faint는 희미하기는 커녕, 끝장나게- 강렬하게도- 선명하기 그지없는- 파란색과 갈색이다. 눈치챘는가? 이건 청기백기 게임이 아니다. 이곳에 하얀색 깃발을 들고 허우적거리며 항복, 항복!을 외치는 사람은 없다. 우리는 끝장나게- 강렬히- 그리고 선명한 파란색과 갈색 깃발을 휘두른다. 우리가 이런 음악을 했다는 사실은 차츰 희미해지다가 없어져버릴지도, 잊혀버릴지도 모른다. 그럼에도 우리는 당신의 뇌리에 온 힘을 다해 깃발을 휘두르며 달려들 것이다. 또렷하고 선명한 인상을 남기기 위해서.

The rehearsal is reserved. In Korea, reserve is more of a duty than fun or pleasure, so it is more of a time-consuming task. In music, however, the word reserve comes quite differently.  It's the beginning of a heated, exciting time, no audience, no audience, but we're playing without pressure. The mistakes that would have killed the team on the stage can be laughed during rehearsals. Oh, but it's not too playful, so feel safe. It's all about it.
